Updated: After a re-count of opinions, we’ve decided The Hangover deserves a spot in the Top 5 a little bit more than The Proposal, thanks for noticing!
2009 has been a rollercoaster of films, we’ve had so much variety in film and a heck of a lot of those films being sequels and remakes. And not to worry, there’s going to be plenty more come 2010, but before 2009 is over, we thought we’d compile a list of the films we think particularly stuck out in our memories and deserve some mentioning. So here are, in no particular order, The Film Buzz’s Top 5 Films of 2009.
Star Trek
Just amazing. J.J Abrams set out to give this franchise a kick start that it so desperately needed, and hurrah, not only did he succeed, but the release of this film found a whole new generation of Star Trek lovers. May this Star Trek series live long and prosper.
Avatar
A lot of you loved this film, some of you didn’t. I myself didn’t find Avatar to live up to the amount of buzz that surrounded it, but I have to say Avatar was without a doubt a feast for the eyes, and then some. I found myself several times in the film thinking, ‘Where did they film this? It’s so beautiful!’, before bringing myself back to reality and remembering it’s not real. May the Oscar for visual effects go to the genius guys and gals behind these visuals.
The Hangover
The Hangover was an instant success in comedyland about three groomsmen who lose their groom in Las Vegas and the retracing of the steps in their drunk misadventures leads to stomach-curling, facial-muscle-paralysing laughs. It was definitely most popular with the younger, booze-infested generation who I’m sure have been through many similar times as the poor clueless, hungover guys in The Hangover. With a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and 9 other nominations including Teen Choice awards, The Hangover is definitely more than just drunken, epic adventures of the night before.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button has to be one of the films I wanted to see most of all this year. It turned out not that particularly great and was way too long, but it gave us a story that I’d never seen or heard before and it like Avatar used some pretty ground breaking CGI wizardry that was very impressive indeed.
Up
Up just had to be in this list. A Disney Pixar creation that was pure magic. TFB liked Up because it did something we’ve never seen before. It doesn’t matter who you are, what your background or age, the only way you could not enjoy this film is if you were dead inside.
So That The Film Buzz’s Top 5 films of 2009. I don’t expect you to agree, I myself had great difficulty in choosing this top 5. We chose these films because they did something spectacular, or they made us laugh, or they made us sit up and go ‘WOW or they simply told us a story.
It has, I’m sure you’ll agree, been a most captivating and engrossing year for film, so roll on 2010 and give us more gloriously wonderful and atrociously awful films for us to enjoy. What will you be wanting to see next year?
