Martin Scorsese directs Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams and Emily Mortimer in an adaptation from Dennis Lehane’s Shutter Island novel.

The Plot

DiCaprio takes on the role of U.S Marshall Teddy Daniels along with his partner Chuck. The two of them are sent to Shutter Islands Ashecliffe Hospital to investigate the disappearance of one of the patients played by Emily Mortimer.
After a somewhat rocky start the two of them then begin to unearth what seems like a twisted plot to experiment on the patients of the institute.
Teddy actually pushes to be placed on the Shutter Island case for his own reasons and it soon becomes apparent that these secrets and plots go a lot deeper than initially thought with Teddy finding himself drawn deeper into the Shutter Island world.

The Thoughts

Shutter Island is most definitely watchable with DiCaprio and Kingsley delivering charming performances, but I feel Scorsese tries far too hard to keep us in suspense throughout the whole 138 minutes which tended to drag past the hour and a half mark.

Shutter Island aims to get inside the head with somewhat disturbing scenes that had a profoundly frightening effect on me afterwards upon which I found myself asking how humans could be so cruel? So don’t see this if you don’t like seeing nasty images.
This isn’t your average run-of-the-mill predictable thriller. Sure there are some expected scenes and the smartest of us will probably be able to figure out what’s going on before they spell it out for us all, but overall it’s a clever story.

All the secrets and twists become clear by the end of the film, with the ending open to different interpretations which may lead to some confusion, still a worthwhile trip if you don’t mind leaving feeling almost unsatisfied if you need a definite ending to your films. This is a film you can only see once to get the full impact, think along the lines of A Beautiful Mind. but it’s a film that made an impression on me but not entirely memorable or a film I would want to see again anytime soon.

Blake Lively

Lively will be playing Carol Ferris, who in the DC Comics was the vice president of her father’s aircraft company. Ferris was also Green Lantern’s love interest and was also Star Sapphire who ended up battling Green Lantern several times but was always defeated by him. Ryan Reynolds will be playing the role of Hal Jordan/Green Lantern.

Lively will also be starring in Ben Affleck’s next  film The Town as Krista. The Town will be directed by Affleck, who also co-adapted the screenplay from the novel Prince of Thieves by Chuck Hogan. The Town is about four men who are thieves and friends who are being hunted by an FBI agent. We’ll update you with news on this project as we get it, but The Town is set for release in September 2010.

Darren and his friend Steve (Josh Hutcherson from Bridge to Terabithia) visit the Cirque Du Freak and find many weird and wonderful things such as bearded ladies and poisonous but magical spiders, the two are then embroiled into the world of vampires with Steve realizing that Mr. Crepsley (John C. Reilly of Step Brothers) is in fact a vampire.

After requesting to become a vampire and then being refused for having ‘bad blood’ Steve declares revenge on Crepsley. Darren on the other hand, after a series of events is welcomed into Crepsley’s clan as a Vampire’s Assistant.

Many fans have been waiting patiently for the Cirque Du Freak to hit cinemas; this adaptation encompasses the first three books of the total 12 in the series, leaving the possibility for several sequels to completely cover the Darren Shan Saga.

The Vampire’s Assistant is definitely a film for the fans. Currently sitting pretty at number 5 in the UK Box Office Top Ten, many young teenage fans can’t wait to tell me how excited they are to see this film, however the enthusiasm  for Darren Shan seems to die down when the words ‘Twilight’ or ‘New Moon’ are mentioned. Something tells me when New Moon hits theatres later this month there will be only one vampire on everyone’s minds. Looks like Universal Pictures were right to release this tale before the Edward Cullen bubble hits us.

John meets Savannah while on leave from the army, in a nutshell he helps her out and the two quickly fall in love, but alas John decides to go back to the army and the two keep in touch over time  by letters.

Based on the book of the same name written by Nicholas Sparks the author of The Notebook, you just know this is going to be a mushy, weepy, romantic but touching story. I thought the same thing about The Notebook and now it’s probably in my list of the top 300 films I’ve seen that didn’t suck even though I thought it would.

We can expect to see this in theatres in February 2010 – better stock up on those tissues.
