With a mostly British cast and British born director and writers, Kick Ass is a film we on this little island can be well and truly proud of.  Aaron Johnson leads the Kick Ass cast in a funny, witty and maybe slightly eccentric storyline.

The Plot

Dave is a normal but completely unnoticed high school student, him and his friends like to hang out at comic book stores and joke about the women they can’t get. One day Dave decides that he wants to be a super hero, even though he has absoluetly no training or special skills to help him out what so ever.

The Thoughts

For a virtually unknown cast, that are mostly under 20 years of age, Kick Ass is top notch – each actor holds their own adding their own style and flair to a set of already great characters. Not once was I bored or looking at my watch during this film, but was mostly in awe of the character Hit Girl played by the then eleven-year-old Chloe Mortez. Hit Girl steals most the scenes she’s in, though you may find the language coming out of this kid’s mouth a little unsettling, it’s all in good humor. Aaron Johnson, who you may remember from Brit flick Nowhere Boy is a good choice for Kick Ass – something about him screams Peter Parker and he’s not half bad to look at either.

Usually I can’t stand Nicholas Cage but in Kick Ass I found his performance refreshing and highly entertaining, his chemisty with Mortez is perfect and they make a good team as Hit Girl and Big Daddy and of course Mark Strong does the bad guy Frank D’Amico just as well as he does all the other bad guys he’s ever played.

The producers pay homage to the comic  legends such as Superman, with them never forgetting where their roots came from. A superb film with clever one liners and dialogue that is just down right funny. Kick Ass made up for the recent string of disapointments they’ve been spewing out at the cinema and then some. You must see this film as soon as you can.

Taken from the comic book series of the same name by Mark Millar published under Marvel Comics, the film stars Aaron Johnson as Dave Lizewski,  Chloe Moretz as the object of Dave’s desire, Nicolas Cage as her dad (Cage being the least likely of all actors to star in a teen comedy) and Christopher Mintz-Plasse - the awesome McLovin’ from Superbad (2007).

This unique brainchild is directed by Matthew Vaughn who was the producer of Harry Brown (2009) and Layer Cake (2004).

This looks like a fantabulous comedy for 2010, although not released in the US til April 2010, we might have to wait a bit in the UK but hey, it may well be worth the wait. Looking set to be a teen hit, it goes in a similar direction  to Superbad, which was hugely successful. Kick-Ass has a solid plot, lots of laughs and an attractive concept: we all have a superhero inside of us.

I think all of us can relate to this film – I’m pretty sure all of us have marvelled at superheroes when we were a child and wondered what it would be like to be a superhero ourselves, I even remember thinking I may have hidden supernatural powers too. We just haven’t jumped off buildings to prove it.
